How old do I have to be to volunteer?

A volunteer must be at least 14 years of age. Volunteers ages 14 and 15 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian while volunteering. The adult accompanying them must also be registered in the HSMC Volunteer Program.

Do I have to clean kennels?

No, there are many other volunteer opportunities available at HSMC. Detailed Position Descriptions are included on this website.

Do I have to be scheduled to volunteer?

We have volunteer opportunities that are unscheduled and scheduled, depending upon your volunteering interest and preferences. Not all volunteers are scheduled.

How do I sign up?

Fill out a volunteer application and attend a volunteer orientation. You must do both – the application and the orientation to be registered in the program. The application must be completed online as it registers you in our system and reserves you a spot for the orientation date you choose.

How long does the volunteer orientation last?

You should a lot 2 hours for the total orientation. It includes a tour of the shelter.

Can I come on days the Shelter is closed?

Yes, once you have some volunteer experience and learn the procedures, volunteers are welcome to come on our closed day which is Wednesday.

Do you track volunteer hours?

Yes, once you are enrolled and orientation is complete, you are given a login to our volunteer system which tracks your hours. We will verify and sign any documentation needed for school.
